Our Edmonton Animal Hospital Offers Ultrasound Services

Our Edmonton animal hospital always strives to be up-to-date on the latest technology so we can provide the best in veterinary care to each patient. As such, we're happy to announce that we now offer ultrasonography right here in our office. Ultrasonography, also known as ultrasound, is a technology that utilizes sound waves to produce an image of your pet's internal organs and other parts of the body.

At Edmonton South Animal Hospital, we use our ultrasonography services to help diagnosed potential medical problems and come up with a customized course of treatment for your pet.

Benefits of Ultrasound for Pets in Edmonton

There are many benefits of using ultrasound to diagnose a medical problem, especially when compared to other diagnostic techniques, such as X-rays and even MRIs. For example, ultrasound is completely non-invasive and pain-free to pets. Most pets don't even realize what's going on when they undergo ultrasonography. Furthermore, ultrasounds are completely harmless; unlike X-rays, there is no exposure to radioactivity.

Furthermore, ultrasounds are one of the most inexpensive forms of diagnostic testing, so it's a cost-effective option for many of our clients and often one of the first tests we'll recommend.

How Our Edmonton Veterinarian Uses Ultrasound Technology

Ultrasounds are also extremely versatile in their potential uses. For example, our Edmonton Veterinarian can use ultrasound technology to find out if a female pet is pregnant without exposing the pet or its (potential) babies to any radiation from an X-ray. If a pet is determined to be pregnant, additional ultrasounds may be used throughout the pregnancy to monitor the babies and make sure they are developing properly.

In addition to determining if a pet is pregnant, this form of testing may also be used to spot cysts, tumors, or other abnormal growths inside the body. In some cases, an ultrasound may even be used to evaluate the health of a pet's heart and other internal organs.

One of the more common uses for ultrasound we see in our office is that of determining if a pet has ingested something that is obstructing the intestines or stomach. An ultrasound allows us to see different parts of the stomach and intestines, in addition to any potential blockages or other problems often caused by a pet swallowing a foreign object that it shouldn't have. With the proper diagnosis, we can make the right decisions when it comes to treatment and help pets make a full recovery.

Sometimes, we will recommend ultrasound in combination with other diagnostic testing (such as X-rays) in order to make a more accurate and confident diagnosis, but this will vary from one case to the next.
