Myths of Spay and Neuter Surgeries

dog being surrounded by two kittensMany pet owners fail to spay or neuter their pets due to a few misconceptions. The most common myth is that spayed and neutered pets will become overweight following the procedure. Spaying and neutering does not cause massive weight gain in pets. Your pets accumulate the extra weight from eating too much and not exercising enough.

The second common myth is that spaying and neutering is expensive. Sterilization surgeries are considered routine and are very cost effective when compared to raising a litter of puppies or kittens. Spaying and neutering also eliminates your pet's desire to escape your home to find a mate. When your pet escapes your home, they are at risk for getting into a car accident and into fights with other domestic and wild animals, which can result in extremely high vet bills.

When to Spay and Neuter your Pet

Our veterinarian recommends spaying and neutering all pets before the age of six months. Prior to six months of age, pets are not sexually mature. This means that female pets have not gone into heat, and male pets do not yet have the urge to mark their territory and find a mate. This offers the best chance of reducing the chance for bad behaviors related to the desire to mate.

Spaying and Neutering with our Edmonton Veterinarian

Our Edmonton, Alberta veterinarian provides spay and neuter surgeries for all breeds of dogs and cats. When you bring your female pet into our veterinary hospital for spay procedure, she will be prepped for surgery, given pet-safe anesthesia and oxygen and all of her vitals will be carefully monitored throughout the surgery. During your female pet's sterilization surgery, her ovaries and uterus will be completely removed, and she will have a small incision on her abdomen.

Surgery preparation for male pets is identical to female pets. The only difference is that the testicles will be completely removed.

After the surgery, your pet will be monitored to ensure they are not experiencing any complications. When your pet is ready to return home with you, he or she will be wearing a cone to prevent licking and scratching at the incision site. You will be given aftercare instructions from our veterinarian and a list of signs and symptoms to look for while your pet recovers.

If you are concerned about your pet's comfort, ask our veterinarian about our options for pain medication. We can also schedule a follow-up appointment for your pet to check your pet’s condition after a few days.
